U2의 6집 'The Joshua Tree’는 U2를 일약 세계적인 그룹으로 부각시켰고. 팝계의 살아있는 양심으로 비평가와 대중 모두에게 사랑을 받았다. 가사는 함축과 은유와 냉철함이 있는 시로도 손색없다. 앨범만큼이나 설명이 필요 없는 곡 'With Or Without You'.와 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For'. 'Where The Streets Have No Name' 등 빼놓을 곡이 없다. 또한. 마약 중독의 후유증을 그린 'Running To Stand Still'. 민중의 피폐된 삶을 은유적으로 그린 'Red Hill Mining Town'. 미국의 중미국가들의 내정 간섭을 은유적으로 표현한 'Bullet The Blue Sky'. 폭력이 난무하는 미국 사회를 꼬집은 반기독교적인 'In God's Country' 등이다. 특히 'Running To stand Still'에서 후반에 삽입된 하모니카 연주는 처절하기까지 하다.
